The BIG FIX Uganda

Uganda - Northern Region - Gulu

The BIG FIX Uganda combines rescued-dog companionship, lifelong support for guardian teams and practical animal-welfare education across northern Uganda.

Rescued dogs and people build a relationship

The BIG FIX Uganda launched its Comfort Dog Project in 2014, pairing rescued street dogs with people affected by war trauma in northern Uganda. Participants undertake a 20-week programme involving dog training and support. Working together involves patience, communication and understanding canine behaviour, making the relationship between each guardian and dog central to the project.

Support continues after the training programme

Participants are identified through village counselling groups, and the organisation describes a lifelong commitment to each guardian-and-dog team. Assistance includes help with food and medical costs as well as continuing psychosocial support. Monthly gatherings provide group and individual counselling and peer contact, so the programme is not limited to placing a dog and completing an initial course.

Graduates become educators and animal-care workers

Comfort Dog Project graduates can train as field educators, mentor new participants and contribute to animal-welfare work. At village clinics, educators inspect dog restraints, replace harmful wire or chains with rope collars and explain grooming, washing and everyday care. This creates a practical connection between participation in the project and helping other people care for animals in their communities.

School visits include friendly vaccinated dogs

The school programme brings friendly, vaccinated dogs into classrooms to introduce animal welfare, responsible care and rabies awareness. The organisation also supports the Agole Primary School Animal Rights Club and an Art for Animals programme creating school murals with a local artist. Its Great Dog Guardian Book gives families another resource for learning about behaviour and care.

Radio makes room for questions from listeners

Through MEGA FM and Favour FM, veterinary staff, field educators and community police discuss animal welfare and public-health topics. Call-in segments let listeners raise their own questions. These broadcasts extend education beyond school visits and village clinics, while the official programme pages explain how donations, sponsorship and volunteering support the work with animals and their guardians.
