Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Uganda - Central Region - Entebbe

Ngamba Island offers rescued chimpanzees long-term forest sanctuary care, combining social integration, supplemental feeding and veterinary support in Uganda.

A sanctuary in Lake Victoria

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in October 1998 and is managed by Chimpanzee Trust. It provides a home for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees, with forest space where they can express natural behaviours. The island setting is part of their care environment, but daily human support remains essential to their wellbeing.

Forest access does not replace planned nutrition

The island provides some natural forage, but it cannot supply all the food required by the residents. The sanctuary therefore describes four supplemental feeding times each day, with fruit, vegetables and specialist primate food. This combination illustrates the difference between a forested sanctuary and an entirely self-sufficient wild population.

Joining a chimpanzee group takes care

Rescued chimpanzees may arrive after difficult experiences during capture and captivity. The integration programme introduces newcomers carefully to the existing group, supporting social bonds and relationships. Rehabilitation is therefore not limited to treating injuries. Learning to live with other chimpanzees is a significant part of the long-term care offered on the island.

Veterinary needs change as residents age

The veterinary programme includes health checks, preventive care and responses to illness or injury. The sanctuary highlights geriatric care as increasingly important for its ageing residents. Its team also maintains boundaries and overnight facilities. These routine tasks support a lifelong home for animals whose background, age or behaviour may prevent a return to the wild.

The island is one part of a wider mission

Chimpanzee Trust connects sanctuary care with work on wild habitats, corridors, community relationships and conservation education in Uganda. Its official site provides separate information about visits, school activities, volunteering and symbolic chimpanzee adoption.
