Treating wildlife with release in mind
Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, near Hoedspruit in South Africa’s Limpopo province, cares for animals affected by injury, poisoning and orphaning. Returning them to their natural environment is the goal wherever possible. Some cannot survive independently because of lasting injuries or attachment to humans, and the centre provides sanctuary care for animals that cannot be released.
Residents give conservation problems a face
Guided visits explain the individual histories of resident animals and why they remain at the centre. Their stories connect species information with the pressures facing wildlife, including human-wildlife conflict. Moholoholo ended animal interactions on public tours in April 2019. Visitors observe under guidance; a tour is an educational encounter with the animals’ stories, without touching or handling them.
Following leopards and monitoring vultures
Research extends beyond the treatment of individual patients. Moholoholo describes work tracking the movements and behaviour of leopards using collars, and daily monitoring of vultures visiting its feeding site, often called a vulture restaurant. These activities connect the centre with wild populations and provide a different view of conservation from the long-term care of resident animals.
Student volunteers help with everyday care
The student programme has welcomed volunteers since 1998. Feeding, cleaning and enrichment are substantial parts of the work, including stimulation for inquisitive honey badgers. Depending on actual cases, students may also assist with incoming rescues or young animals. Particular rescues, leopard captures or releases cannot be scheduled as guaranteed experiences; duties follow the animals’ needs and the team’s work.
Choose between a visit and a placement
A guided visit, school programme and student placement involve different arrangements. Schools and other educational groups book ahead. The student programme lists a minimum stay of two weeks; applicants should confirm current age requirements, costs, availability and what accommodation or meals are included. Use the centre’s own booking information to plan the appropriate form of participation before travelling. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
