A week of learning close to wildlife
DAKTARI Bush School welcomes Grade 8 pupils from nearby villages for a five-day environmental education programme. Staying at the camp gives them time to combine lessons with outdoor activities and observation of animals. The programme is built around a small-group residential experience rather than a single classroom presentation or a brief sightseeing visit.
Sanctuary residents have a role in education
Some animals at DAKTARI cannot return safely to the wild because of injury, ongoing care needs or their history of being hand-raised. They receive sanctuary care and help students learn about wildlife. The organisation also describes releasing animals where possible. The educational role therefore accompanies care for residents with different prospects and needs.
Tracks, local careers and practical questions
Lessons include identifying animal tracks and signs, followed by activities in the bush. Career guidance and reserve visits introduce pupils to jobs connected with the environment around them. Social discussions and other life-skills activities make space for questions beyond wildlife facts, linking conservation learning with the choices and concerns young people encounter in everyday life.
Learning continues through community programmes
Outreach campaigns and Eco Clubs extend the work into surrounding villages. These activities complement the residential programme, helping conservation remain a local conversation after pupils leave camp. DAKTARI’s approach brings animal care, education and community participation together, with each programme serving a different part of that relationship rather than operating as an isolated rescue service.
Volunteer participation is organised through the programme
International volunteers help with teaching and animal care and receive a manual for the lessons. People interested in participating should discuss the programme and its requirements directly with DAKTARI. Its official pages state that it is not open for casual day visits. Arranging an approved role or visit is therefore important before travelling to the site. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
