One association, several connected projects
Cristina and Roger Lapis founded Millions of Friends in 1997. Its work includes AMP Victory, where abandoned and injured dogs receive treatment and care while suitable homes are sought. Sterilisation and adoption sit alongside a different responsibility at AMP Libearty: providing a lasting home for bears rescued from harmful captivity or unable to survive independently.
Maya’s story helped inspire Libearty
Cristina Lapis encountered Maya in a small cage near Bran Castle. Maya died before she could enjoy sanctuary life, but her suffering helped inspire the project. In 2005, the association, World Animal Protection and Zărnești Town Hall established Libearty. The forest setting gave rescued bears an alternative to the cramped, barren environments from which many had come.
Space and care support a different daily life
Libearty provides trees to climb, pools and room for bears to retreat, with food adapted to their needs and veterinary care. Guided visits explain the residents’ histories and the realities of captivity. Visitors follow designated routes and remain separated from the animals; the bears can choose to stay away from view, so a visit does not promise a particular encounter.
Education connects classrooms with rescued animals
In 2013, the association launched an optional school course with education partners in Brașov. Seventeen thematic lessons combine animal welfare with practical activities and a sanctuary visit. The Hope Educational Centre, opened in 2019, adds opportunities to learn about horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens and other domestic animals, linking species needs with the responsibilities of everyday care.

Donations can support bear care, dog rescue or education, while virtual bear adoption is a form of sponsorship. Libearty visits require a guided-tour ticket or appropriate reservation, have limited places and exclude children under five.
