Building a shelter in a wooded valley
Animal Rescue Algarve was founded in 2017 to care for and rehome abandoned, stray and distressed dogs and cats. Land in the Cabanita area northwest of Loulé was acquired in January 2018. After clearance and infrastructure work, the shelter opened that September, with its first adoption following in November of the same year.
Daily life includes space to socialise
The Cabanita site combines dog kennels, catteries and outdoor areas for play and socialisation. These spaces support care while animals wait for a suitable home. The organisation presents adoption as a central purpose of that work: an animal’s stay at the shelter is part of a process intended to lead to life with a family.
Matching a companion with a household
ARA places animals as family pets, not as working or guard dogs. Applicants complete a form that explores household agreement, living arrangements, time the animal would spend alone and the resources available for ongoing care. The team reviews applications and arranges a meeting when a suitable match is possible, rather than treating selection from a photograph as approval.
Preparation and contact continue beyond selection
Adoption preparation includes health checks, vaccinations and sterilisation when the animal is ready. Discuss the individual medical record with the team, particularly for young animals or those with specific needs. ARA also makes follow-up enquiries and sometimes visits after adoption, encouraging families to share their experiences and keep in contact as the animal settles into its new home.
Arrange the visit through the adoption team
Shelter visits are by appointment. Start with the application and discuss the animal’s temperament, routine and needs with ARA before deciding.
