A network built around animals living outdoors
Created in Portugal in 2008, Animais de Rua combines sterilisation with medical care, feeding and responsible adoption of sociable animals. It organises its work through regional groups rather than a single shelter intake point. Its central CED programme brings municipal services and colony caretakers into the same process, linking veterinary intervention with continuing care where the cats live.
What happens during a CED intervention
CED stands for capture, sterilise and return. Cats are captured for sterilisation, receive parasite treatment and a small identifying mark on the left ear, then return to their original territory. A caretaker continues feeding and protecting them there. The ear mark helps identify cats already sterilised, while the return forms part of an organised colony programme rather than a relocation scheme.
Care continues after the veterinary appointment
The association publishes practical guides on the caretaker’s role, colony feeding, sterilisation and ear marking. Other materials address orphaned kittens and placing suitable animals for adoption. These resources recognise that daily observation and care remain necessary after surgery. They also help distinguish the needs of a managed outdoor colony from those of an animal who can join a household.
Training draws on field experience
Its CED implementation manual combines the association’s experience with contributions from International Cat Care and Change For Animals Foundation specialists. It is intended for municipal collection centres, animal organisations, informal groups and residents. As a DGERT-certified training provider, Animais de Rua also offers courses covering shelter routines, environmental enrichment and isolation management, alongside colony programme organisation.
Applications are reviewed against available resources
To request colony sterilisation support, submit the official form with colony information and at least three photographs. The team reviews the details and may request more information. Approval and funding are both needed before interventions proceed, and a waiting list may apply. Use that application route for CED requests and the separate adoption or support channels for other ways to participate. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
