Yangon Animal Shelter

Myanmar (Burma) - Yangon Region - Yangon

Yangon Animal Shelter grew from the story of a street dog named Lucy into a refuge combining dog care, rehoming and sterilisation advocacy.

The street dog behind the shelter

Yangon Animal Shelter traces its origins to Lucy, a fearful, underweight street dog befriended by a teacher living in Yangon. Feeding and spending time with Lucy grew into helping other dogs nearby. After Lucy and her family were poisoned, the founder decided that informal feeding alone could not provide the protection these animals needed.

From donated land to a larger refuge

Working with another teacher and the parent of a pupil, the founder established a shelter on donated land. The original intention was to house around forty to fifty dogs. Demand soon exceeded that plan, and a second, larger donated property allowed the shelter to relocate and accommodate more animals needing safety.

Why return to the street became difficult

The early plan included trapping, neutering and returning dogs to reduce future births. The organisation’s history explains that continuing poisoning made release back onto the streets unsafe. Campaigning against poisoning consequently became a priority. Its account distinguishes that intended population-management approach from the practical need to keep rescued dogs protected at the shelter.

Sterilisation and public understanding

The shelter promotes sterilisation for both street dogs and pets and seeks to explain its role in preventing unwanted litters. It also advocates humane management of Yangon’s dog population. This educational work complements care for the residents: protecting dogs already in the shelter and reducing the number needing help are related but different tasks.

Supporting dogs already in care

The published history reports that the shelter has reached capacity and cannot accept every request. It relies on donations, fostering and adoption to sustain its work, without government funding according to its own account. Readers can use the official adoption and support information to explore practical involvement, while contacting the team directly about any current intake request.
