A refuge for animals with very different histories
Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand cares for animals rescued from the wildlife trade, private captivity and tourist entertainment, as well as wild animals injured in accidents. Its rescue centre in Phetchaburi houses primates, bears, otters, birds, reptiles and other species. The animals’ histories shape both their daily care and what recovery can realistically achieve.
Release where possible, sanctuary where needed
Rehabilitation aims at a return to the wild when feasible. For many residents, previous captivity or other limitations make release impossible, so the centre provides lifelong shelter in environments designed around their needs. This distinction matters when visiting: seeing an animal at the sanctuary does not mean it is ready or able to survive independently.
Veterinary care since 2005
The wildlife hospital was built in 2005. Its veterinarians and nurses provide emergency treatment, rehabilitation and continuing care for permanent residents, and also serve local pets and livestock. Hospital volunteering has specific entry requirements: applicants must be adults, speak English and be qualified veterinarians or technicians, or at least third-year veterinary students. Student placements are generally observational.
Practical work without handling wildlife
Wildlife Rescue Centre volunteers help with feeding, enclosure cleaning and environmental or behavioural enrichment under a strict hands-off policy. WFFT also offers separate elephant-refuge and hospital projects, while the People and Animals Thailand clinic focuses on sterilising dogs and cats at another location. These roles involve different tasks and qualifications rather than a single interchangeable animal encounter.
A booked visit as another way to learn
Full-day and half-day visits introduce the rescue work through guided tours, with limited daily capacity and advance booking. The programme does not offer elephant riding. Consult the visit details, volunteer options and hospital requirements before choosing. AnimalProtech’s map locates the organisation; WFFT confirms participation and current arrangements directly.
