The Welfare of Stray Dogs

India - Maharashtra - Mumbai

The Welfare of Stray Dogs helps Mumbai’s community animals through neighbourhood treatment, a free Sewri clinic, sterilisation and carefully matched adoptions.

From opposing culling to neighbourhood care

The Welfare of Stray Dogs was established in Mumbai in 1985 in response to municipal killing of street dogs. In 1994 it began sterilisation, vaccination, rescue and medical care programmes. Its work centres on coexistence between people and community animals, connecting veterinary services with the people who already know and care for dogs in their neighbourhoods.

Treatment can happen where a dog lives

WSD’s field team responds to sick and injured animals within their own territories, covering an area from Cuffe Parade to Mahim and Sion. Animal nurses, veterinarians and volunteers participate in this work. Treating appropriate cases on site offers a route distinct from bringing every animal into kennels, while the team assesses what care each situation requires.

The Sewri outpatient clinic supports carers

The free outpatient clinic in Sewri treats street animals brought by community caretakers and feeders. Its published examples include wounds, skin conditions and eye infections, as well as more serious cases requiring repeated follow-up. Blood tests are provided when needed without charging those carers. WSD also offers surgery and inpatient care, but states that hospitalisation capacity is limited.

Sterilisation works alongside vaccination and education

WSD runs its sterilisation programme in partnership with Mumbai’s civic body and vaccinates dogs undergoing the procedure. Separate anti-rabies vaccination drives extend that work. Its education programme adapts activities to different audiences, including students, addressing kindness towards animals, dog bites and rabies prevention. These strands connect clinical work with practical understanding among the communities sharing space with street dogs.

Adoption involves getting to know the dog

The organisation promotes adoption of Indian street dogs alongside rescued and abandoned pets. Applicants are screened and interviewed, encouraged to spend time bonding with their chosen dog, and matched with help from temperament assessments. Contact WSD through its official adoption or animal-help channels for the relevant next step. Donations and volunteering support the free services, while current resident availability can change.
