Rescue linked to wider community work
Welfare for Animals Guild Rwanda, known as WAG, is a volunteer-run organisation caring for dogs and the communities around them. Its shelter in Kabuga, Kigali, supports rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming. Partnerships extend that work beyond individual admissions, bringing together veterinary training, community education and population-management projects alongside the daily needs of rescued animals.
Training local veterinarians through practical work
In 2024, WAG partnered with Worldwide Veterinary Service on a two-week animal birth control course for fourteen Rwandan veterinarians. Dogs received sterilisation during the training. In 2025, the organisation also hosted three University of Rwanda veterinary students for their final-year internship, connecting professional development with practical experience in animal welfare and care.
A comic makes information available in Kinyarwanda
Another 2024 partnership involved the University of Global Health Equity’s Centre for One Health and Tufts University. Together they created a rabies-awareness comic in Kinyarwanda. It covers responsible dog ownership, animal welfare and rabies prevention, giving community education a locally accessible format rather than relying only on a consultation or a discussion at the shelter.
Campaigns combine sterilisation with vaccination
In 2025, WAG worked with Foundation for Veterinary Aid International on campaigns in Kigali and the Eastern Province. The organisation reports that 268 dogs, along with some cats, were sterilised over eight days, while more than 400 dogs received rabies vaccinations. These are results of that documented campaign, illustrating how partnerships translate into organised care beyond the shelter.
Local support starts with the individual situation
WAG’s guidance distinguishes a lost pet from a dog needing rescue. The team may help publicise an animal to find its family or discuss fostering when capacity allows. Reports of serious injuries should include a location and useful details. Volunteering, fostering, supplies and donations support this work; potential professional partners can contact WAG about training, education or care projects.
