Turning an idea into a working shelter
Animal advocate Fatemeh Motamedi established an organisation in 2003 with the aim of creating a shelter in Iran. Fundraising was only part of the challenge: the rural site needed water and electricity before animals could live there. By mid-2004, Vafa had welcomed its first dogs near Hashtgerd. Its name means loyalty, a theme central to its story.
A location shaped by the needs of street dogs
Vafa’s history describes homeless dogs and road injuries in the surrounding area as reasons for establishing the shelter there. Treatment, regular food, water and shelter create a different daily life for animals arriving frightened or hurt. Care includes vaccination, medical attention and sterilisation, with procedures carried out by veterinarians and their professional support team.
Capacity is part of the welfare commitment
The organisation explicitly recognises limits on space and resources. Its approach considers whether dogs will have enough food and room to sleep, move, play and learn, rather than admitting more animals than the shelter can support. That principle makes available care and staffing central to admission decisions, even when a puppy or injured dog needs help.
Adoption offers a route beyond the shelter
Vafa publishes photographs and information about dogs ready for families in Iran or elsewhere. Interested adopters contact the team to discuss the animal and the process. The aim is a dependable home that can provide ongoing care. An international enquiry requires its own assessment and arrangements; the existence of overseas adoptions does not guarantee transport to every destination.
Volunteers and visitors carry the message outward
Public visits introduce people to the work of staff and volunteers and the lives of resident dogs. Posters, leaflets, events and social media extend that education beyond the shelter. Private donations and volunteer time sustain the work. Confirm current visiting arrangements with Vafa, or discuss supplies and other support that meets the shelter’s practical needs.
