A change in direction after years of rescue
Terry Kovick Biskovich and Linda Green founded Unidos para los Animales in Antigua in 2010. The organisation initially rehabilitated and rehomed rescued dogs and cats. In July 2022, it closed its rehabilitation facility and concentrated on sterilisation programmes and community education. Understanding that change is important when looking for help: its current focus is prevention through clinics and learning.
Taking veterinary teams to underserved villages
Mobile clinics bring sterilisation and vaccination services to communities with limited access to veterinary care. Veterinary teams travel to the target villages, while volunteers help organise care, monitor recovery and support guardians with information. The approach responds to both distance and cost barriers, taking a coordinated clinic to people rather than relying on every family reaching a fixed centre.
Working with carers of free-roaming animals
Alongside services for family pets, the organisation works with independent rescuers and communities on trapping, neutering, vaccination and return. This makes local carers part of the programme for animals without conventional homes. Volunteer work, private donations and grants sustain the organisation, connecting practical animal care with the people who know the animals and the neighbourhoods they occupy.
An activity book reflects local life
Artist and team member Carin Steen created the twenty-four-page book How to Care for My Dog, or ¿Cómo Cuidar a mi Chucho? Its illustrations reflect Guatemalan communities. Activities introduce humane treatment, everyday needs, sterilisation, vaccination and canine body language, making information relevant to both children and adults rather than assuming readers already have experience caring for dogs.
Learning while the clinic is running
Families receive the book at clinics, where children can read and colour while waiting with parents. Copies also reach other animal-welfare organisations and services working with families; a free digital version is available through the education page. Donations support subsidised clinics and educational materials. Contact the organisation about upcoming services or collaboration, rather than expecting the former rehabilitation facility to receive animals. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
