From wallabies to a wider rescue role
Shai Ager founded the Agile Wallaby Project in 2017 to establish protocols for a large-scale macropod relocation. The group later developed into The Agile Project – Wildlife Inc., extending its work beyond wallabies and other macropods to native species across Far North Queensland. That origin still informs its attention to wildlife living alongside human development.
Rescue relies on trained people
The organisation operates a twenty-four-hour hotline and a network of rescuers and carers. It provides training in triage, care and humane capture of native animals. These skills connect the first response to the longer work of rehabilitation, where different species require different knowledge of diet, behaviour and appropriate accommodation.
Preparing for independent life
Rehabilitation aims to return an animal to its natural habitat when it can survive independently. Carers work with veterinarians to assess injuries and illness, then provide recovery conditions suited to the species. The programme describes large, secure enclosures that resemble natural habitat, helping animals regain fitness and practise the behaviours they will need after release.
Keeping wildlife wild
The project emphasises limiting human contact and avoiding the taming of animals in rehabilitation. Recognising natural food, responding to danger and behaving appropriately with their own species are part of readiness for release. This makes wildlife care different from preparing a domestic animal for adoption: the desired outcome is independence in the wild.
Research and local decisions
Citizen scientists contribute data collection and research intended to improve wildlife management. The group also works with councils and developers on local wildlife issues, linking individual rescues with decisions affecting habitat. People interested in participating can consult its official training and involvement information, while its rescue contacts provide the route for reporting an injured or orphaned native animal.
