Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre

South Africa - Western Cape - Plettenberg Bay

Tenikwa at The Crags rehabilitates Garden Route wildlife, using income from conservation visits and accommodation to help fund animal care.

From injured birds to a wildlife hospital

Tenikwa’s rehabilitation work began in 2002, when its founders cared for injured birds in a wooden shed behind their home. Based at The Crags near Plettenberg Bay, the organisation now provides facilities for injured and abandoned wildlife from South Africa’s Garden Route. Animals arrive through nature authorities, members of the public and the wider community.

Different spaces for treatment and recovery

The centre describes a wildlife hospital with a laboratory, high-care facilities and hospital cages. Its rehabilitation spaces also include seal enclosures, a marine facility and areas for preparation before release. These distinct settings reflect the different stages of care: receiving an animal in need, supporting recovery and preparing suitable patients for life outside the centre.

Release involves conservation authorities

Rehabilitation operates under permit conditions issued by government bodies, including environmental authorities and CapeNature. Releases take place in cooperation with nature authorities and other conservation organisations. This makes returning an animal to the wild a coordinated part of the rehabilitation process, tied to the animal’s circumstances and the centre’s permitted work rather than a routine outcome for every arrival.

Patients and public tours are kept separate

Animals undergoing rehabilitation are kept away from the general public. The animals seen on ordinary tours are individuals that cannot be released and help introduce visitors to wildlife conservation. Tenikwa occasionally offers technical visits on specific dates to explain the rehabilitation facilities and the team’s work. Those visits have limited places and age restrictions, with arrangements confirmed separately.

Visits contribute to the care programme

Conservation tours and guest accommodation help fund rehabilitation and conservation activities. A visitor can therefore support the programme while learning about wildlife, without assuming access to recovering patients. Consult Tenikwa’s current tour information for the kind of visit offered and any booking conditions. Questions about a wildlife case should go through its rescue contact rather than a tourism reservation. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
