Spokane Humane Society

United States - Washington - Spokane

Spokane Humane Society combines adoption with training for long-stay dogs, a community food pantry and veterinary support for low-income families.

Training for dogs waiting longer

K9 Boarding School helps selected shelter animals whose behaviour has become an obstacle to adoption. Donations support training tailored to each animal through outside partners. Spokane Humane Society chooses the animals and works with trainers as places become available. This is a programme for animals in its care, rather than a general boarding service for owned dogs.

A clinic with eligibility requirements

The society’s veterinary clinic offers sterilisation, vaccinations and microchipping for low-income households. Families submit documentation of qualifying assistance or income when requesting appointments. Vaccine visits also require eligibility evidence. Checking the current requirements first helps applicants prepare the right documents; the published clinic schedule should not be treated as an invitation to arrive without booking.

Medical help beyond routine procedures

The Veterinary Medical Assistance Program, or VMAP, offers reduced fees for eligible families needing preventive, surgical or non-overnight urgent medical care. Access depends on the clinic’s schedule. Owners should describe their animal’s needs to the clinic team and ask about availability. The programme does not promise overnight hospitalisation or unrestricted emergency access.

Food support and adoption have different locations

Donated food reaches local families through the Community Pet Food Pantry at the main campus. Adoption visits also take place there, but the Everyday Adoption Center operates separately at Northpointe PetSmart. Before travelling, check which location holds the animal you hope to meet and which service you need, because the two sites serve different purposes.

Volunteers prepare for specific responsibilities

Applicants complete an acceptance process, orientation and training before starting. Opportunities include feline companionship, canine care, public-facing work and trained clinic support such as cleaning instruments or preparing patients. These responsibilities require different skills and supervision. Prospective volunteers can discuss a suitable role and time commitment with the organisation before taking on regular shifts.
