A sanctuary equipped for slower recovery
At 8336 W B&A Road in Severn, Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland cares for older dogs until adoption or through longer stays when needed. Its facilities include a quarantine building, separate rooms for recovery after surgery, grooming space, laundry and a kitchen. Indoor companionship, trail walks and yard time form part of life alongside medical rehabilitation.
Some dogs need a very particular home
A longer stay can reflect recovery from treatment or a need for a home without stairs, without other pets, or with experienced carers. The sanctuary’s history includes bonded Chihuahua mixes Korky and Isabella, who spent two and a half years there before finding a home together. Their placement developed through a volunteer’s relationship with them and a foster stay.
Diamond’s story shows why time matters
Diamond arrived in February 2022 with severe diabetes and needed months of treatment before she was healthy enough for a new home. Finding a family prepared for her continuing care took additional time. She was adopted in September 2023. This completed story illustrates the work between initial rescue and a placement able to sustain an older dog’s individual needs.
Adoption is based on matching and appointments
Submit an application before visiting; all visits require appointments and walk-ins are not accepted. The process includes veterinary references, two non-family references, a meeting involving family members and existing dogs, and a virtual home check. An application does not hold a dog, and processing may take two weeks or more. Donation drop-off arrangements are separate from animal visits.
Owner surrender requires a separate assessment
The sanctuary accepts surrender applications only from Maryland residents who can transport their dog to Severn. Owners provide information and veterinary contacts for staff review. If the initial assessment suggests a suitable fit, the team arranges a meeting with the dog. Submitting the form is a request for consideration, rather than confirmation that a place has been accepted.
Seniors 2 Seniors helps pets remain at home
The Tommy Raskin Seniors 2 Seniors programme provides pet food and supplies to senior citizens in Anne Arundel County. This is a pantry service supporting existing families. Check its current distribution calendar and contact the sanctuary about participation. Sponsoring longer-term residents, fostering and donating supplies offer other ways to support the dogs and the people caring for them. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
