Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary

Bolivia - La Paz Department - Coroico

Senda Verde shelters rescued Bolivian wildlife near Coroico and connects lifelong animal care with native-bee protection, education and Amazon forest restoration.

An orphaned capuchin at the beginning

Senda Verde began in 2003 on the eastern flank of the Bolivian Andes. Founders Vicky Ossio and Marcelo Levy rescued an orphaned capuchin monkey that year, starting a sanctuary that would receive animals affected by trafficking and habitat loss. Its base near Coroico remains central to the daily care of these rescued wild animals.

Rescue can require a complicated journey

The organisation describes responding to animals that have been confined in small cages, injured or otherwise harmed through human interference. Getting them to safety can involve trucks, aircraft or helicopters, depending on the circumstances. Arrival is only the beginning: orphaned animals may need feeding and attention throughout the day and night as they recover.

A permanent home for wildlife that needs one

Long-term residents are an essential part of Senda Verde’s sanctuary role. Staff and volunteers provide ongoing care rather than treating every arrival as a short stay before release. Guided visits share the animals’ individual histories, making the consequences of wildlife trafficking visible through the lives of animals that continue to depend on the sanctuary.

Protecting bees and restoring forest beyond the sanctuary

Senda Verde also works on native-bee protection and a rewilding initiative in an Amazon biodiversity corridor near Madidi National Park. The corridor project is separate from the Coroico sanctuary and includes community-led approaches. Together, these activities extend its work from caring for individual rescued animals to protecting pollinators and the habitats that support wild populations.

Education built around coexistence with wildlife

Sanctuary visits, outreach and student programmes explain both the work of rescue and ways to coexist with wildlife. Volunteers can participate through the organisation’s dedicated programme, while donations support ongoing care and conservation. The official site distinguishes visits, volunteering and its wider restoration work, helping supporters choose a route connected to their interests and available time.
