Seal Rescue Ireland

Ireland - Leinster - Gorey

Seal Rescue Ireland combines seal rehabilitation in Courtown with coastal rescue, public education and river-habitat restoration linked to healthier seas.

From Dingle to a seal hospital in Courtown

The organisation began in Dingle, County Kerry, in June 2010. After a severe storm damaged that facility in March 2014, it moved to Courtown, County Wexford, and became known as Seal Rescue Ireland. The hospital cares for sick, injured and orphaned seals with the aim of returning healthy, independent animals to the wild.

A report starts an assessment

The charity runs a 24-hour seal-reporting hotline. A trained local volunteer can assess a reported animal, send photographs to the animal-care team and monitor its condition. Transport to the hospital follows that assessment when intervention is needed. Reporting a seal therefore does not automatically mean it should be removed from the shore.

Learning to feed and building strength

Some young patients need fish school, where staff move fish on strings to stimulate pursuit of prey. Recovered seals then progress through pools that allow swimming, diving and competition for food. The centre has four pools, from a shallow nursery to the larger pre-release pool, giving patients different environments as their abilities develop.

Preparing animals for independence

Human contact is reduced in the final rehabilitation stage so seals retain the caution needed around people in the wild. Staff monitor weight and readiness, and a numbered rear-flipper tag enables later identification. This work can take weeks or months; a successful recovery involves more than simply treating the original injury.

Why a seal charity also plants trees

Seal Rescue Ireland links habitat work to concerns about water quality. It collaborates with farmers, landowners and communities on native planting in the Ounavarra catchment, reporting more than 33,700 trees planted by the end of 2023.
