Meet adoptable cats and dogs at the centre
San Francisco SPCA’s adoption centre works on a walk-in basis. Applicants must be at least 18 and provide photo identification and proof of address. Counsellors help with the choice, and same-day adoption is possible when requirements are met. Animals are not reserved or held, so the current listing and visit determine availability.
Care before an animal joins a family
Cats and dogs receive medical and behavioural assessment during their shelter stay. Before adoption they are sterilised, microchipped, given age-appropriate vaccines and treated against parasites. This preparation gives adopters a starting point for ongoing care; the organisation also recommends a veterinary check after adoption to plan the animal’s continuing health needs.
The Excelsior clinic handles a defined range of needs
At 4527 Mission Street, the Community Veterinary Clinic provides affordable prevention and treatment for minor conditions. It can arrange sterilisation, but surgery takes place at the Mission Campus facility. The community clinic does not provide emergency care, X-rays, laboratory diagnostics, adoption or health certificates, so those needs require a different service.
Dog and cat vaccine services changed in July 2026
Mobile Vaccine Clinics now focus on dogs, especially puppies, unvaccinated dogs and those at greater risk of preventable disease. Cat vaccination moved to scheduled indoor events. Mobile teams offer vaccines and parasite prevention and help arrange sterilisation; they do not perform surgery onsite. Phone or text assistance is available for people who cannot easily book online.
How the services work together
The summer 2026 account of Matilda describes a dog receiving needed surgery through collaboration between the community clinic, hospital and sterilisation team. It shows why the entry point need not provide every treatment. Read the clinic scope, current vaccine arrangements and adoption process. AnimalProtech’s map helps locate the organisation; SF SPCA directs each enquiry to the appropriate team.
