Apply before meeting an animal
Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue does not offer casual viewing of its animals. Prospective adopters first submit an application; meetings follow approval. The team assesses the animal’s interests and explains what it knows about that individual. Applicants receive a submission confirmation, but the small team says it can contact only those who are approved.
Prepare the household for a lasting commitment
Applicants must be at least twenty-one and provide identification showing their current address. Renters need their landlord’s permission. Existing pets must be sterilised when age-appropriate, and household dogs and cats must meet applicable licensing requirements. The rescue does not place animals as gifts for someone else, for breeding or for protection work. These conditions guide the application.
Dog introductions happen in stages
The first dog meeting is for the adult who will be the primary caregiver. Later supervised visits introduce children, the family dog or other dogs the new companion will regularly encounter. The number of visits depends on the animal and household; a home visit may also be required. Approved cat and small-animal applicants arrange their own meeting process.
Adoption preparation and food assistance
The rescue’s adoption package includes veterinary preparation such as sterilisation, vaccinations and identification, plus a complimentary visit through participating clinics. Separately, its Kibble Bank shares donated cat and dog food with owners needing temporary help. Distribution takes place on two Thursdays each month, but each household collects once monthly. Check the events calendar for the actual dates.
Education reaches schools and community groups
Humane-education presentations can be adapted from kindergarten through Grade 12. The team also visits scouting groups, community or resource centres, workplaces and summer camps. Sessions connect practical animal care with empathy, compassion and respect for other living beings. Teachers and group organisers can contact the rescue to agree on an appropriate presentation rather than assuming a standard shelter visit. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
