Rifugio Miletta

Italy - Piedmont - Novara

Rifugio Miletta in Agrate Conturbia combines a permanent sanctuary with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, with different routes for each kind of care.

Two connected forms of animal protection

Rifugio Miletta began in Agrate Conturbia, in Italy’s Novara province, in 2013 through Alessandra Motta’s initiative. It provides a lasting home for animals rescued from exploitation and distress. In 2016, it also became a wildlife recovery centre, or CRAS, adding treatment and rehabilitation aimed at returning wild animals to freedom when their condition allows.

Sanctuary life respects individual relationships

Sheep, pigs, wild boar, goats, horses, donkeys, cattle, dogs, cats and geese are among the sanctuary’s residents. The site describes shared spaces with relatively few internal fences, allowing many animals to live together. Its approach emphasises each animal’s preferences and relationships, recognising that some seek human company while others prefer distance and should have that choice respected.

Wildlife rescue follows the animal and situation

The CRAS serves Novara and Vercelli, with cases including road injuries, poisoning and animals caught in barriers or canals. Large mammals can require a team at the scene. For birds and smaller mammals, the centre asks finders to call first to establish whether intervention is needed and how delivery should be arranged. The appropriate route depends on the case.

Patient records make care traceable

Each rescued wild animal receives an intake record, which the person requesting help can also view. The centre publishes aggregated information that supports monitoring and research alongside the management of individual patients. Care and rehabilitation seek release where possible; animals unable to return can receive permanent refuge. This connects immediate rescue with a documented decision about the animal’s future.

Public visits are currently suspended

The visitor page states that public visits are suspended to protect resident pigs and wild boar from African swine fever risk, with no reopening date given. The Miletter newsletter, blog and social channels share rescue stories and daily work instead. Follow those official updates and use the dedicated wildlife contact for an animal in difficulty, separately from visitor or support enquiries. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
