Pilpintuwasi

Peru - Loreto - Punchana

Pilpintuwasi grew from a butterfly farm into an Amazonian wildlife sanctuary near Padre Cocha, caring for animals affected by trafficking.

A butterfly house that became a sanctuary

Pilpintuwasi means butterfly house in Quechua. Gudrun Sperrer arrived in the Peruvian Amazon in 1995 to study the plants butterflies depend on, then established a butterfly farm in 2001. As people brought confiscated, injured and abandoned animals, the project developed into a wildlife rescue centre with a broader conservation role.

A forest home beside Padre Cocha

The sanctuary occupies sixteen hectares near Padre Cocha on the Nanay River, outside Iquitos. Its work addresses animals affected by trafficking and habitat loss. The species described by the organisation include jaguars, ocelots, tapirs, anteaters, parrots, toucans and monkeys, alongside the butterflies that gave the project its name.

Recovery and daily care

Rescue and rehabilitation aim towards reintroduction where possible, while other animals need secure long-term care. Volunteers can help with food preparation, feeding support, enrichment, maintenance and guided tours. These practical jobs connect conservation with the daily work needed to keep a sanctuary running and respond to the different needs of its residents.

Getting there and understanding the visit

Access from Iquitos involves travelling to Bellavista Nanay port and taking a boat to Padre Cocha. The sanctuary is not accessible by car. Guided visits offer a way to learn about the animals, but direct interaction is not permitted. The natural forest terrain is not wheelchair accessible, an important point when planning the journey.

A relationship with the neighbouring community

Pilpintuwasi employs people from Padre Cocha and offers opportunities for residents and visitors to learn about Amazonian wildlife. The organisation says it relies on visitor income, volunteers and private support rather than government funding. Its official information explains volunteering and visits, allowing supporters to understand both the conservation work and the practical journey to this riverside community.
