Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA

United States - California - Burlingame

Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA combines pet services with burrowing owl care and conservation breeding for two vulnerable California species.

Care beyond the adoption centre

Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA works with both companion animals and native wildlife in California. Its different facilities serve different purposes: the Burlingame Center for Compassion handles adoptions and education, while Coyote Point handles lost animals and pet intake. The Saratoga Wildlife Care Center provides wildlife rehabilitation and houses its imperiled-species work.

Giving young burrowing owls a start

In 2019, the organisation began its Burrowing Owl Program with the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency. Operating under state and federal wildlife permits, the team raises young owls until they are ready for release. The aim is to return mature birds to the wild, where they may contribute to local breeding populations.

Breeding wildlife for release

The Imperiled Species Program focuses on rare native reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Its current projects include the Santa Cruz long-toed salamander and giant garter snake. Staff breed and raise animals for suitable release sites, then work with state and federal agencies to monitor them. Release is therefore followed by investigation of what happens in the wild.

Two species, different habitats

The salamander survives in small, isolated parts of California’s central coast and breeds in seasonal ponds. The giant garter snake depends on wetlands and rice fields in the Central Valley. Describing these habitats explains why conservation involves more than keeping animals in care: the programme must also consider where released animals can live and reproduce.

A sanctuary project with a separate purpose

The organisation has purchased 216 acres in La Honda for a planned sanctuary for pets unlikely to find conventional adoptive homes, including hospice dogs and poorly socialised cats. Its published description still discusses design and construction, so this should not be treated as an open visitor facility. Consult the relevant official service page before arranging a visit or bringing an animal. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
