A network expanded in 2022
Oregon Humane Society has campuses in Portland and Salem. Its New Road Ahead expansion added three facilities in late 2022: the Community Veterinary Hospital, Behavior & Rescue Center and Animal Crimes Forensic Center. Together, they address different reasons animals need help, from unaffordable medical treatment to difficulty coping in a busy shelter and suspected cruelty.
Veterinary care that helps families stay together
The Community Veterinary Hospital aims to reduce the surrender of pets whose families cannot afford critical treatment. In its October 2025 three-year report, Oregon Humane recorded 46,780 patient visits and $2.8 million in financial assistance since the hospital opened in October 2022. These are cumulative figures from that report, rather than annual totals.
A quieter place to learn and recover
The Behavior & Rescue Center gives animals with substantial behavioural needs space away from the commotion of the adoption shelter. Staff develop individual plans to build confidence, help animals socialise or recover from trauma. A purpose-built cattery, training areas and home-like rooms allow work to reflect the situations animals may encounter after adoption.
Beethoven and Meeko’s shared transition
A January 2023 account describes two bonded Chihuahuas transferred from Multnomah County Animal Services after their owner died. Beethoven and Meeko struggled in busy shelters and moved into the new centre. They were subsequently adopted together. Their story illustrates why a different environment can form part of preparing an animal for a new home.
Evidence as another form of protection
The Animal Crimes Forensic Center supports investigations through veterinary examinations and evidence collection.
