Ohlone Humane Society

United States - California - Newark

Ohlone Humane Society brings trained animal-and-human teams into East Bay community settings, including library reading sessions and organised visits.

Animal-and-human partnerships in the community

Ohlone Humane Society’s Pet Therapy Program organises volunteer teams in the Fremont, Union City and Newark area. A team consists of a person and a suitable companion animal, which may be a dog or a cat. Visits can take place in settings such as senior care facilities, schools, hospitals and colleges, with arrangements made through the programme rather than informal drop-ins.

Libraries make room for a canine listener

Read-to-a-Dog is organised with Fremont and Centerville libraries. Children can read aloud to a therapy dog in a supportive setting, including those who feel shy about reading in front of others. The activity gives the animal-and-handler partnership a specific role in a familiar community space. Families should consult the library or programme for current session arrangements.

Joining requires preparation and assessment

Prospective handlers must be at least eighteen and have owned their cat or dog for at least six months; the animal must be older than one year and current on veterinary examinations and vaccinations. The joining process includes Pet Partners team registration, an Ohlone temperament evaluation, a volunteer form and society membership. These requirements apply before representing the programme on visits.

Mentoring helps a new team begin

New teams complete a shadowing or mentoring session with an established team and their own animal. The society encourages people to volunteer locally and points those outside its area toward other organisations. Sponsors can support a team’s training, evaluation, registration and official uniform. Facilities wishing to arrange a visit can contact the Pet Therapy Program to discuss what is possible.

The mailing address is not an animal shelter

Ohlone’s address at 39120 Argonaut Way, PMB 108, Fremont is a mailbox, explicitly not a shelter. Its Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is a separate facility at 37175 Hickory Street in Newark. Wildlife cases should go through that centre’s dedicated contact, rather than the general information line or social media messages. Pet therapy enquiries follow their own programme channel, keeping visits and animal-help requests clearly directed. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
