New Lives Animal Rescue

New Zealand - Waikato Region - Cambridge

New Lives Animal Rescue now concentrates on subsidised desexing in Waikato, with a voucher scheme and a clearly changed approach to cat intake.

A rescue that changed its emphasis

Former SPCA inspector Donna Young founded New Lives Animal Rescue in 2014 to help unwanted and mistreated animals around Waikato. Following discussions with regional organisations in 2022, it shifted towards preventing animals from entering shelters. Community desexing campaigns and food support during financial hardship became part of that approach to keeping animals with their families.

What the desexing voucher includes

Eligible owners purchase a voucher and New Lives pays the participating veterinary clinic directly. The package includes sterilisation, microchip implantation and registration on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register. Identification is part of the scheme rather than an optional addition. Owners therefore arrange a defined package through the programme, not an unrestricted payment towards any veterinary bill.

Different locations for cats and dogs

Cats can be treated through CareVets Hamilton South, CareVets Horsham Downs or 3 Stone Vets in Te Awamutu. Dogs use 3 Stone Vets only. The voucher cannot be taken to an arbitrary clinic chosen by the owner. Checking the participating practice is an essential step before making plans for the procedure.

Eligibility is geographically specific

For cats, the listed areas are Waikato, Waipa, Ōtorohanga and Hamilton district boundaries. Dog support is restricted to Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Pirongia, Ōtorohanga and Ōhaupō. The organisation describes a trust-based scheme intended for people who need financial assistance, with limited funding. The current application page provides the relevant eligibility checks and voucher arrangements.

A changed route for cats needing homes

New Lives states that it no longer accepts general cat intakes, except cats previously adopted through the rescue. It also no longer lends humane traps under its revised model. Its help page gives rehoming and local referral information, making it important to distinguish the organisation’s current preventive service from its earlier rescue-and-rehoming role.
