Two campuses with different local roles
Nevada Humane Society has worked in Northern Nevada since 1932. In Washoe County it is separate from Washoe County Regional Animal Services, which transfers animals into its care. At Carson City, it operates the city’s animal services. Understanding that distinction helps residents identify the appropriate organisation when a pet is lost, found or needs a new home.
Arrange the appointment before trapping
The Community Cats Program serves Washoe County and Carson City, working with volunteers, rural organisations and colony caretakers. It offers trap rental, trapping guidance, vaccination and affordable sterilisation. Caregivers are asked to arrange a veterinary appointment before trapping a cat, so capture, transport and the available clinic space can be coordinated as one planned process.
Food support for registered colonies
Colony caretakers can apply for Pet Pantry assistance and register their colony with the society. Registration helps the team record location, health and sterilisation or vaccination status. Approved participants collect food monthly at Reno or Carson City with identification. The programme supplements the colony’s food supply and maintains a connection between caregivers and the community-cat team.
A placement for cats accustomed to outdoors
The Working Cats Program places cats already familiar with outdoor living. They are sterilised, microchipped and vaccinated, and the published programme waives the adoption fee. The new caregiver still provides food, water and shelter. A suitable property and reliable daily care remain part of the arrangement, even when a cat also hunts rodents.
A wider network of animal care
The society also accepts transfers from rural shelters and supports fostering across its wider operation. Its published 2025 impact summary records 9,961 animals cared for, 2,423 fostered and 6,251 sterilisation surgeries. These dated measures describe different parts of the work. Current service pages help residents choose between campus enquiries, fostering and the community-cat programme. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
