Montreal SPCA

Canada - Quebec - Montréal

Montreal SPCA combines shelter work with targeted sterilisation and support for owners. Its community-cat programme has a specific municipal footprint following changes in January 2026.

From working horses to wider animal protection

Founded in 1869, Montreal SPCA initially concentrated on the treatment of working horses across the island. Its mission developed into broader protection against neglect, abuse and exploitation, alongside advocacy and public education. Today, understanding the particular programme is important: shelter admission, support for owned animals and care for community cats follow different routes.

Exploring options before surrender

The organisation’s surrender guidance encourages owners to consider solutions to the problem that makes keeping an animal difficult. For health-related concerns, it suggests discussing available options with a veterinarian. If surrender remains necessary, a request is reviewed individually, taking the circumstances and shelter capacity into account; admission is by appointment and depends on the service area.

Mittens makes sterilisation more accessible

Opened in March 2015, the Mittens clinic was designed to offer reduced-cost sterilisation for cats and dogs belonging to people with limited financial resources. It was named after a donor’s cat. The current surrender guidance still identifies Mittens as an option for low-income families facing sterilisation costs, with access handled through the clinic’s own admission process.

Community cats need continuing local care

The Capture-Stérilisation-Retour-Maintien programme, or CSRM, addresses suitable unsocialised cats living outside. It combines organised capture and sterilisation with return to their territory, where residents continue providing food, water and shelter. Participation involves coordination with the team, suitable equipment and an appointment, rather than simply arriving with a cat.

A service boundary that changed in 2026

Since 1 January 2026, Montreal SPCA no longer runs CSRM for City of Montréal boroughs. It continues the programme for Hampstead, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Ville de Mont-Royal and Montréal-Ouest. Check the official service-area notice before making a request, as this distinction determines which organisation should receive the enquiry.

The surrender information and CSRM programme page explain the separate procedures. AnimalProtech’s map locates Montreal SPCA at 5215 Jean-Talon Street West; the organisation confirms which service and appointment route applies to the situation.
