Milagros Caninos

Mexico - Ciudad de México - Ciudad de México

Milagros Caninos provides sanctuary care in Mexico City for dogs and cats with serious injuries, illness or a history of mistreatment.

A home for animals needing complex care

Milagros Caninos focuses on dogs and cats whose circumstances require sustained care: animals with serious injuries, disabilities, illness or experiences of mistreatment. The sanctuary’s story began after founder Paty Ruiz lost her dog Clavo in 2004. That loss led her towards helping animals whose needs made their future particularly uncertain.

Living arrangements shaped around each animal

The sanctuary describes its residents as living without cages, in areas organised by temperament, size, energy and individual characteristics. Veterinary and care staff support their daily needs. This arrangement is part of the organisation’s approach to long-term life at the sanctuary, where recovery and day-to-day comfort may require more than a short shelter stay.

Why some residents are not offered for adoption

Adoption is one route for suitable animals, but it is not the outcome for every resident. The organisation explains that some older animals, animals with cancer and those with complex, costly medical needs remain in sanctuary care. Sponsorship therefore supports continuing care for individuals who may never appear among the adoption listings.

Activities that connect people and animals

The sanctuary describes organised visits involving children in vulnerable circumstances, people with disabilities and older people. Activities include brushing, bathing, feeding, gentle play and time with the animals. Children can take part in grooming activities, while older visitors spend time with the animals and share memories of pets from their own lives.

Peluso and the street-dog memorial

A sanctuary dog named Peluso inspired the bronze Monumento al Perro Callejero, unveiled in July 2008 at Insurgentes Sur and Moneda in Mexico City. The memorial gives the organisation’s concern for abandoned dogs a public presence beyond the sanctuary. Its official pages explain resident care, adoption possibilities and ways to support animals who need a lasting home there. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
