A rescue rooted in Usa River
Sandra Kliegelhoefer and Jens Fissenebert established Mbwa Wa Africa after settling in Usa River near Arusha and seeing the need for animal care. The rescue developed around treatment, rehabilitation and finding suitable homes. In 2015, its activities expanded to include vaccination campaigns, sterilisation clinics and an animal-welfare class at a local primary school.
Clinic appointments help fund community care
The veterinary clinic provides diagnostic facilities including X-ray and ultrasound. Fees from paying clients support rescue work and treatment for families unable to afford care. This links ordinary pet appointments with assistance for injured or neglected animals. Free or discounted care depends on eligibility, so owners should discuss their circumstances and the appropriate appointment directly with the clinic.
Recovery includes monitoring and patient handling
Rescued animals may arrive with serious injuries or after prolonged neglect. The team describes gradual, patient handling alongside medical treatment and observation during recovery. Night staff monitor severely injured animals and those with special needs. Feeding and activity are adjusted for young, elderly or unwell residents, with the aim of preparing animals for suitable homes when their condition allows.
Prevention reaches beyond the shelter
Sterilisation clinics involve partners such as Worldwide Veterinary Service and Fondation Aide Vétérinaire Internationale. Rabies vaccination campaigns work with Mission Rabies and other supporters. These initiatives take animal care into the community and connect the welfare of dogs with public health. They form a continuing part of the organisation’s work alongside care for animals already in the rescue.
Children learn how to understand animals
Primary-school education covers everyday care, medical needs and the body language of dogs and cats. Learning how animals communicate supports more considerate interactions and helps children feel comfortable around them. Educational materials accompany the sessions. People can support the Tanzania-based work through volunteering, fostering, adoption or donations, using the relevant programme contact rather than the overseas fundraising office for local care.
