A Connemara rescue working with local pounds
MADRA, short for Mutts Anonymous Dog Rescue & Adoption, began in 2005 with co-founders Marina Fiddler and Tara Nic Dhiarmada. Based in Connemara, it works particularly with dogs from Galway and Mayo pounds. Rescue is followed by medical care, behavioural assessment and preparation for a suitable home, using both kennels and foster placements according to the dog’s needs.
Changing circumstances can affect people and dogs together
The organisation also receives private-surrender enquiries from people facing illness, bereavement, housing difficulties or behavioural challenges with a dog. It works with COPE Galway, Galway Simon and the HSE to support vulnerable people who may need temporary care for their animals. This adds a practical welfare role alongside finding permanent homes for unwanted dogs.
Fostering can make room for a slower recovery
MADRA’s special-needs fostering account explains how some dogs need a quieter home, a tailored care plan and additional support for the fosterer. Its example of Mervyn, a collie with severe injuries, describes recovery after a leg amputation and pelvic fractures. Veterinary follow-up, quiet activities and an experienced foster home formed part of that individual journey.
Millie’s Fund addresses the next generation of unwanted dogs
Launched in 2023 in memory of a puppy who did not survive, Millie’s Fund offers a neutering scheme focused on high-risk breeds such as collies, terriers, lurchers and their crosses. The organisation reports that the fund expanded to male dogs as well. Current eligibility and arrangements belong with the scheme’s official information rather than a general assumption of unrestricted access.
Greyhounds and lurchers have a dedicated connection
WAGI, We Adore Greyhounds Ireland, joined MADRA in 2021, bringing work focused on greyhounds and lurchers into the organisation. School workshops and community education complement these rescue programmes. The official adoption and fostering pages explain how to enquire, while individual dog profiles help prospective homes consider the animal’s needs rather than choosing solely by appearance or breed.
