A shelter shaped by changing practice
Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association has worked in West Virginia since 1935. Its history identifies 2013 as a turning point toward individual care and more routes out of the shelter. Medical attention, behaviour assessment and enrichment now form part of an animal’s stay, alongside work toward adoption, reunion with a family or transfer to a rescue partner.
Care inside and outside the shelter
An in-house veterinary team was established in 2016. The following year brought Fix Charleston, a public clinic for affordable sterilisation and wellness care, and the Care-a-Van. This mobile programme takes veterinary services, adoption activities and outreach into communities, while also supporting disaster response. Families should check the relevant programme for current access arrangements.
Small kittens and temporary homes
KCHA opened its volunteer-run Kitten Nursery in 2018 to care for vulnerable newborn kittens. Foster homes provide another setting for animals needing support before their next placement. The organisation’s history describes expanding that network during the pandemic, connecting shelter care with people able to look after animals in their own homes.
More routes toward a family
In its account of 2025, KCHA describes adding a transport van to support rescue partnerships, adoption journeys and outreach. A partnership with the St. Albans Police Department also created a public microchip scanning station. These are different routes toward the same practical goal: finding an appropriate placement or helping a lost animal return home.
A local legacy of compassion
Cassie’s Fur-ever Friends raises money for dog food in memory of Cassie Johnson, a Charleston police officer who previously worked as a humane officer. Her connection with KCHA gives the campaign a specific community history. Supporters can consult the campaign’s current instructions or explore the association’s wider volunteering and foster opportunities. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
