Learning alongside shelter animals
Jacksonville Humane Society’s education programme offers several ways for people to engage with animal welfare at its Beach Boulevard centre. Camps, school visits, teen programmes and activities for homeschool students sit alongside adult learning. The range gives families and educators different routes into the shelter, rather than limiting involvement to adopting an animal or becoming a regular volunteer.
Pawsitive Reading begins with orientation
Children in Pawsitive Reading read aloud to dogs or cats at the shelter. Before joining, a child and at least one parent or guardian attend a one-time orientation, booked in advance. An adult accompanies subsequent visits. The activity combines reading practice with a form of enrichment for animals while they wait for homes.
Making a reading visit work
After orientation, participants can visit during adoption-centre opening hours and sign in and out at the front desk. The programme requests at least 30 minutes of reading. Children may bring their own material or borrow from its library. JHS records reading hours and can verify this service, which makes participation distinct from simply dropping off donations.
Helping from home through Paw Pals
Paw Pals invites children to choose a dog or cat from the shelter listings and send it a letter, including a return address for a reply. Youth groups can also organise supply drives or follow the service-project guide. JHS asks people to check unlisted toy or treat projects first and does not certify volunteer hours for donation drives.
Community rehoming is a separate route
The Community Pets listings show animals seeking homes directly through their owners, using Rehome by Adopt-a-Pet. These animals are not in JHS care, and staff have not evaluated them or confirmed their listing information.
