A forest programme with community participation
Iwokrama brings together forest conservation, scientific research and sustainable use in Guyana. Its work includes forest management and business activities as well as biodiversity protection. Understanding that combination matters: local livelihoods and decisions about how the forest is used are part of the project, rather than separate from its conservation purpose.
A formal relationship with North Rupununi
The North Rupununi District Development Board, established in 1996, represents participating Indigenous communities in their relationship with Iwokrama. It has a place in the organisation’s international governance. A memorandum signed in 2004 formalised cooperation, giving community participation an institutional foundation beyond occasional consultation or individual project visits.
Learning at Bina Hill
The Bina Hill Youth Learning Centre in Annai began in 2001. Its two-year residential programme brings together natural-resource management, forestry, wildlife, agriculture and tourism. Students also study business skills, mathematics, English and information technology. This breadth connects work in the surrounding landscape with practical preparation for employment and community life.
Language and ecological knowledge
The Makushi Research Unit dates to 1995 and has largely involved women documenting language, culture and knowledge of the environment. Its work recognises that understanding a forest also involves the people who know its plants, animals and changing conditions. Traditional skills are likewise included alongside academic and vocational subjects in youth education.
Young people and the living forest
Wildlife clubs give local young people a further route into conservation activities. Together with Bina Hill and the research unit, they show why Iwokrama’s community work extends beyond visitor experiences. Readers exploring the organisation can use its community-development information to understand these relationships; the Georgetown office should not be confused with the forest programme or River Lodge.
