A rural enclosure became a territorial resource
Humane Society Yukon began in 1987 with a fenced dog enclosure on rural property and a telephone line run by volunteers. Incorporation followed in 1989. This modest beginning responded to animals needing care when no dedicated local organisation or facility existed. The society now cares for dogs and cats from communities across Yukon at its Whitehorse shelter.
Mae Bachur’s gift built a lasting home
The shelter carries Mae Bachur’s name because her legacy gift made its construction possible. Staff attend to emotional well-being as well as food, housing and veterinary needs. Donations continue to support those services and enrichment. The building’s name therefore records a specific contribution to animal care rather than referring to a separate rescue organisation.
Adoption includes preparation and a conversation
Staff help animals develop household skills and social confidence while discussing suitability with prospective adopters. Fees include an intake assessment, vaccines, deworming, microchipping and age-appropriate sterilisation. If an animal is too young for surgery when adopted, HSY covers the surgical portion of the later procedure. Families should clarify those arrangements rather than assume every future veterinary expense is included.
Foster carers help introduce potential families
HSY supplies all food and covers veterinary expenses during foster care. Carers also meet prospective adopters and introduce the animal they know at home. If a carer wishes to adopt, they receive the first opportunity. Long-waiting animals may enter foster care at the kennel manager’s discretion; enquiries go through that team rather than an automatic placement system.
Volunteering includes the practical work of winter
Volunteers can walk dogs, offer quiet cat companionship or help with young animals. Other tasks include laundry, stock organisation, repairs and snow shovelling, alongside fundraising and committee work. Independent volunteers must be at least sixteen; younger participants may attend with an adult. Registration leads to information and training resources, including instructions for the Adopt a Dog for a Day programme. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
