From Missoula to communities farther away
Humane Society of Western Montana began as the Missoula Humane Society in 1963. It now combines shelter care and adoption with services intended to keep animals in their existing homes. The independent nonprofit describes food assistance, behavioural support and veterinary care as part of that work, alongside outreach to communities where routine animal services are difficult to access.
Taking veterinary resources into rural areas
The outreach programme was developed for pet owners and caregivers without access to veterinary services. Its approach includes vaccination and sterilisation while working with local communities to understand their needs and cultures. Travel is therefore part of service delivery: the organisation brings resources to people who cannot readily obtain them near home, rather than relying entirely on shelter visits.
Reading the rural impact figures correctly
For the combined period 2021–2025, HSWM reports serving 6,028 pets and 3,383 families through rural outreach. It also records 2,239 sterilisation surgeries, 9,991 vaccines and more than 63,811 miles travelled. These are five-year totals describing different activities, not one year’s results or a count that should be added together as unique animals.
Learning in a classroom or at the shelter
Humane education presentations are available to groups and classrooms in Missoula and Lolo, covering subjects such as veterinary care, everyday pet needs and clicker training. Groups can also arrange shelter tours, with possible activities including toy making and animal socialisation. The education team can help shape a fundraising or service project around the group’s interests.
Choose a current way to participate
The education page explicitly says Critter Camp is not currently being hosted and directs families toward Missoula Parks and Recreation for camp options. Classroom presentations and arranged tours remain listed separately. For support with an owned pet, use the owner-support and veterinary resource pages; for education, contact the programme team about a suitable activity and available dates.
