At Humane Society of Southern Arizona in Tucson, Love Stays Home helps families work on the behaviour that shapes daily life with a dog. Its Life Skills course consists of five weekly hour-long classes for dogs aged six months or older. Participants provide vaccination records and learn techniques they can continue using at home.
Individual behaviour support
Private obedience sessions give a dog and handler an hour of individual attention. The programme accepts dogs from ten weeks of age and describes support for reactivity, fearfulness, resource guarding and confidence building. Visiting teams with different species
Pet VIP prepares animal-handler teams for visits to schools, hospitals and care settings. Dogs are only part of the programme: cats, birds, rabbits and other suitable animals may also participate. The animal needs to be comfortable around people and meet the programme’s health, vaccination and behaviour requirements before joining visits.
A commitment beyond the classroom
Handlers must have cared for their animal for at least six months and commit to 24 volunteer visits a year. Participants aged 15 to 17 need a guardian throughout training and visits. The six-week certification process includes an aptitude test, training and a final evaluation; it does not certify service animals.
A wider community role
Alongside training and Pet VIP, the organisation offers educational activities for children, school groups and service groups.
