Humane Society of Chittenden County

United States - Vermont - South Burlington

Humane Society of Chittenden County helps pets stay connected to families through coordinated crisis support and its Spay the Mom programme.

Crisis support coordinated with human services

Humane Society of Chittenden County’s Good Neighbor Program serves residents of Chittenden and Grand Isle counties who are working with a local human-service organisation. Support is free and confidential. Staff coordinate with owners and caseworkers, focusing on reunion or help that lets an animal remain at home while a family addresses a difficult situation.

Temporary housing with different time limits

The programme offers up to two weeks for dogs. Cats and small animals also begin with two weeks, with possible extensions to six weeks subject to capacity. Care can include medical attention, vaccination and sterilisation when needed, often through foster homes. Communication with the family and caseworker continues during the animal’s stay.

Help without separating the family

Good Neighbor can also provide care needed to meet housing or programme requirements while an animal remains with its guardian. Supplies may include food, litter and crates. These options recognise that temporary boarding is only one possible response: sometimes the practical obstacle is a veterinary requirement or the cost of daily care.

Spay the Mom keeps the mother in her home

The separate Spay the Mom programme supports owned cats or dogs and their young. Mother and offspring receive vaccination, microchipping and sterilisation without an enrolment charge. After surgery the mother returns to her family, while the kittens or puppies enter adoption, combining care for an existing litter with prevention of another one.

Timing depends on the litter

If the young can be safely separated and are under one year old, the programme can arrange a surgery-day return for the mother. Pregnant or nursing families may instead enter foster care until separation is appropriate. Owners must follow the programme’s placement arrangement; independently rehoming young after enrolment ends eligibility. Official pages explain applications and the different care pathways.
