Humane Society London & Middlesex

Canada - Ontario - London

Humane Society London & Middlesex places outdoor-oriented cats through Whiskers at Work and supports local households through No Empty Bowls.

More than one route to a home

Humane Society London & Middlesex has served animals since 1899. Alongside its wider shelter and adoption work, it recognises that some cats need a different kind of placement. Whiskers at Work is designed for cats already in its care who are better suited to an indoor-and-outdoor lifestyle than conventional indoor adoption.

Which cats use Whiskers at Work?

The programme includes cats with different levels of comfort around people, from feral animals to friendly cats that prefer outdoor access. Only animals specifically identified with the Whiskers at Work banner are eligible. The programme is not an intake service for people seeking to hand over a cat already living outside.

A working home still provides daily care

A suitable placement must include permanent heated shelter, such as an appropriate barn, warehouse, stable or garage. The adopter supplies food and water every day, checks the cat regularly and arranges veterinary care. Resident dogs must not have a history of harming cats or a high prey drive that would put them at risk.

From application to collection

Applicants submit the programme form, which the team reviews before a telephone interview. Collection follows approval. The society prepares the cats with sterilisation, microchipping, vaccinations and parasite treatment, and provides seven days of food. These arrangements make the placement a managed adoption with continuing responsibilities for the new caregiver.

Supporting animals within existing families

HSLM also took on the No Empty Bowls pet food programme in February 2023. This offers another way to support animal welfare in the community, alongside finding homes for shelter residents. People considering a working-cat placement should begin with the dedicated application and the individual cat listings, where the programme banner identifies the relevant animals.
