From a farm sanctuary to Helping You Help Animals
Carolyn Press McKenzie and Jim McKenzie opened Pakuratahi Farm Animal Sanctuary at Kaitoke in 2001. In 2008 it became HUHA, short for Helping You Help Animals. The Wellington-based organisation developed by involving more people in animal care, extending its work beyond what the founders could achieve on their own land.
Different animals need different outcomes
HUHA works with pets, farm animals and wildlife. Rehabilitation may lead to a new home, release where appropriate, or permanent sanctuary. Its long-term residents have included animals with disabilities and monkeys and wallabies from a closed zoo. This range explains why a rescue cannot always end with ordinary pet adoption.
Temporary shelter after a major emergency
During the Nelson bushfires in 2019, HUHA reports establishing a temporary shelter within 24 hours of arrival. It remained for four weeks, until the last of 950 sheltered animals could return home. That dated example shows a disaster-response role centred on keeping displaced animals safe while their communities recover.
Animal care as a community skill
Volunteers help with daily care, cleaning, socialisation and exercise. Education also reaches schools and community groups, and HUHA uses mediation to help people and local authorities resolve animal-welfare problems. Its emphasis on practical knowledge gives supporters ways to contribute beyond taking an animal home themselves.
The Haywards Hill project and arranging a visit
HUHA’s 157-acre sanctuary project at Haywards Hill brings care, education and regional evacuation planning together. The sanctuary page offers visit booking and still describes some facilities as planned, so use its current booking information before travelling. Read the organisation’s history and rescue accounts for more context. AnimalProtech’s map helps place the organisation within the wider rescue network.
