A history rooted in working animals
Hamburger Tierschutzverein von 1841 traces its founding to 10 December 1841, when 113 people met following Amanda Odemann’s initiative. Early concerns included horses and dogs used to pull loads. The association’s history shows how that attention to everyday animal suffering developed into organised care for found animals and the creation of a shelter.
The shelter and its changing address
Construction at the current shelter site began in 1962. Its familiar Süderstraße address changed to Neue Süderstraße 25 when that part of the street was renamed in 2024. The association also communicates through its magazine, ich&du, first published in 1956, connecting the public with shelter life and wider animal-welfare subjects over successive generations.
Work beyond the shelter grounds
The association describes rescue drivers working around the clock on Hamburg’s streets. It also cares for free-living cats and arranges their sterilisation, alongside animal-welfare advice and investigation of reported concerns. These activities involve different kinds of assistance, so a found animal, a missing pet and a welfare concern each have their own contact route on the website.
Introducing children to animal welfare
KinderSonntag combines learning and creative activities for children aged six to twelve. Schools and children’s groups can arrange shelter tours, while educators can request lessons tailored to their setting. Youth activities also include projects outside the shelter. Most offerings require advance registration, allowing the team to organise the group and the appropriate learning experience.
Check capacity before arranging a visit
The October 2026 website notice reports intake restrictions for several groups, including cats, reptiles and some birds, because the relevant accommodation is full. Exceptions require discussion with the shelter. Adoption meetings are preferably arranged by appointment. Current notices therefore matter alongside the general service descriptions when planning to bring an animal or meet one. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
