Guelph Humane Society

Canada - Ontario - Guelph

Guelph Humane Society combines shelter care with GHS Cares support for families, a community pet-food network and wildlife assistance within a defined local service area.

A shelter linked to community support

Founded in 1893, Guelph Humane Society moved to its present home at 190 Hanlon Creek Boulevard in March 2021. Alongside shelter and adoption work, its GHS Cares programmes help people facing barriers to caring for their animals. The programme fund can be allocated across different forms of assistance as community needs change.

Pet food reaches people through several partners

The Pet Food Bank asks owners to call or email so the team can identify their nearest access point. Distribution partners include Chalmers Centre, Hope House and the Sanguen Health Centre’s mobile community health van, as well as local food banks. People donating food are asked to favour small, unopened bags of kibble suitable for community distribution.

Short-term care while a family makes arrangements

Emergency Boarding is intended for Wellington County residents facing urgent, unexpected situations after alternatives such as friends, family or other boarding have been exhausted. The published starting point is typically 72 hours of temporary care. Owners are asked to contact GHS within that period to work on a plan, keeping reunification and the next care arrangements in view.

Hospital stays need a different support plan

Senior Support provides free boarding in the shelter or confidential foster care for eligible older people who need hospital treatment. GHS works with hospital elder-care specialists and social-service agencies to organise an appropriate plan. If a person’s health or living circumstances prevent a return home together, the programme can also help arrange rehoming.

Wildlife assistance has clear local boundaries

The current wildlife guidance covers Guelph, Centre Wellington and Guelph/Eramosa. Call 519-824-3091 before approaching or handling an animal thought to be in distress; outside that area, contact the local provider. For household support, consult GHS Cares. The AnimalProtech map helps locate the organisation and its contact details.
