Frederick County Humane Society

United States - Maryland - Frederick

Frederick County Humane Society helps Maryland families keep their pets through emergency funding, temporary food assistance and veterinary partnerships.

A support organisation for existing pet families

Founded in 1910, Frederick County Humane Society focuses on helping Maryland residents continue caring for their pets. It is a private charity separate from Frederick County Animal Control and the county shelter. FCHS does not house animals for adoption or accept surrendered pets. Its role is practical support for households facing difficulties.

Different funds for different needs

Emergency Medical Assistance helps families facing urgent veterinary treatment costs. Loving Angel supports county residents whose temporary financial difficulties prevent veterinary care when adopting or after a recent adoption. The Archie programme addresses financial assistance near the end of a pet’s life. These are separate avenues to discuss with the office, rather than a promise that every bill will be covered.

Temporary food with defined limits

The Emergency Pet Food Bank uses donated supplies to assist residents through events such as job loss or other hardship. The published allowance is a week’s food on four occasions within twelve months. Each pet needs a rabies certificate and must be sterilised. These conditions distinguish short-term assistance from an ongoing supply of all household pet food.

Sterilisation partnerships and trap loans

The Pet Overpopulation Program works with participating local veterinarians to offer reduced-fee sterilisation for low-income county residents. The society also maintains a small stock of humane cat traps for loan, potentially with a refundable deposit. Call first to check availability and coordinate collection; a trap loan does not itself reserve a veterinary appointment.

Check which services are currently operating

The service page states that Wellcare has been paused since 20 April 2025 until further notice. In-house rabies and microchip clinics have also stopped, although staff can direct residents toward affordable vaccination options. Contact FCHS about the particular need before visiting, especially when an older listing describes a clinic that is no longer offered. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
