Edmonton Humane Society

Canada - Alberta - Edmonton

Edmonton Humane Society combines shelter and adoption with PALS subsidised sterilisation and guidance for owners facing care costs, while remaining distinct from city animal control.

A local organisation with a long history

Edmonton Humane Society traces its beginnings to Rosetta Graydon in 1907, following concern about the treatment of working horses. Its present shelter opened in 2009 at 13620 163 Street NW. The organisation now combines care and adoption for companion animals with behaviour support, education and programmes that help owners keep their pets.

The shelter and city animal control have different jobs

EHS is an independent charity, separate from the City of Edmonton’s Animal Care and Control Centre, although they share a campus and work together. The city centre receives stray animals found within Edmonton. EHS cares for animals needing new homes, including unclaimed animals transferred by the city; it does not investigate concerns or enforce animal laws.

PALS lowers the cost of sterilisation

The Prevent Another Litter Subsidy programme, known as PALS, helps low-income owners of dogs and cats in Edmonton and surrounding communities within 200 kilometres. Applicants provide income evidence and pay an administration fee. There are separate applications for dogs and cats, and age and health conditions apply. Submitting an application does not guarantee an appointment.

What a PALS appointment can include

Animals receive a microchip unless already chipped, and eligible vaccines can be provided with surgery. PALS does not offer vaccination-only appointments. Its seasonal mobile unit accommodates cats and dogs under 25 pounds; the page currently states that mobile applications are closed for the season. Owners should use the current programme instructions to choose the appropriate route.

Guidance when other veterinary costs are difficult

EHS’s care-cost resources point to outside assistance programmes and ways to discuss options with a veterinary clinic. They do not promise that EHS will cover every bill. Read the PALS requirements for sterilisation support, or use the AnimalProtech map to locate the organisation and its official contact routes.
