Columbus Humane

United States - Ohio - Hilliard

Columbus Humane offers separate routes for community cats, working-cat placements and youth education, matching support to different animals and families.

A route for cats returning outdoors

Columbus Humane’s Community Cat Initiative works with Franklin County residents who care for unowned outdoor cats. It provides sterilisation, rabies vaccination and an identifying ear tip for cats intended to return to their community. Pet cats needing services are directed to the Animal Support Center, so the appointment route depends on the cat’s situation.

Planning a community-cat appointment

The initiative operates by appointment, with one cat booked per slot and a limit on cats brought by each person. Every cat must arrive in a covered trap, regardless of temperament. Trap rentals are available in limited numbers, so caregivers should confirm availability first and read the programme’s forms and veterinary instructions before their scheduled visit.

When a different home is needed

The Working Cat Program serves cats already in Columbus Humane’s care that have no outdoor home to return to and are unsuitable for a conventional indoor placement. Cats are at least six months old and assessed by medical and behaviour teams. Potential homes include barns and other secure settings where ongoing care can be provided.

Matching a property and a cat

Prospective working-cat adopters join a waitlist and discuss their property with the adoption team. Cats are prepared with sterilisation, microchipping and veterinary care. Adopters need an enclosed settling-in space, regular food and fresh water; rodent hunting does not replace feeding. The programme currently does not accept new community cats specifically for this placement route.

Teaching children about animal needs

Youth groups can visit the shelter or invite educators to their classroom. A lesson, practical activity and appropriate supervised animal interaction connect subjects such as safe dog encounters, everyday pet care and veterinary work. SPARKY, Pet Pals 101 and Paws to the Future offer different topics. Groups should discuss allergies and access needs when arranging a visit. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
