A centre created for confiscated wildlife
CODEFF established its Centro de Rehabilitación de Fauna Silvestre in 1992 through an agreement with Chile’s agricultural and livestock service, SAG. It receives wild animals confiscated under hunting legislation. The centre is in Cajón del Maipo, around thirty kilometres from Santiago, and is a different location from the organisation’s central office in the city.
Recovery means being able to live independently
Choroy parrots, chilla and culpeo foxes are among the animals described by the centre, alongside grisons and pumas. Rehabilitation addresses physical condition, behaviour and psychological recovery. The aim is an animal capable of feeding, surviving and reproducing without human intervention. Recovered animals are released in protected wild areas where their species occurs; some cannot regain that independence.
Animals and native plants support learning
Animals unable to survive independently may remain at the centre and support environmental education. Talks and guided activities introduce schools, universities, organised groups and companies to native fauna and its environment. A nursery also grows native plants for reforestation and educational activities, connecting the care of individual animals with the habitats on which wildlife depends.
Care also contributes to research
The centre provides opportunities for theses and other scientific studies involving the species in its care. Published examples include technical reports on rehabilitating chilla and culpeo foxes and choroy parrots. These projects make practical rehabilitation experience useful for understanding native wildlife, while the education programme shares that knowledge with people beyond the veterinary and research teams.
Sponsorship and volunteering have distinct roles
Symbolic sponsorship contributes to food, maintenance and animal care; the programme describes progress reports and arranged visits for sponsors. Volunteers can help with maintenance and special projects. Residential volunteering has separate stay requirements and costs. Contact the centre to arrange participation or an educational visit, checking the current conditions and the correct destination before travelling from Santiago.
