Different commitments can support shelter animals
CARE Humane Society in Auburn, Alabama, uses several forms of community participation to help cats and dogs. A person can train for an outing with a dog, provide a weekend home or take on a longer foster placement. Each route has its own preparation and responsibilities, allowing involvement to match the animal’s needs and the helper’s availability.
Doggy Dates begin with training
Before taking an approved dog on a Doggy Date, volunteers complete digital orientation, a shelter tour, dog-walking orientation and three hours of shadowing a staff member. The shelter supplies an adoption vest, lead, toys and waste bags. Outings stay within Auburn and Opelika, giving dogs time outside the shelter and visibility in the community.
A weekend at home
Weekend Warriors is for approved foster carers who take an adult animal home from Friday or Saturday until Sunday or Monday. The short stay provides a break from shelter life while fitting around a weekly schedule. It is a defined foster arrangement, so participants first use the organisation’s foster-application process rather than treating it as an unplanned visit.
Longer fostering meets several needs
CARE lists young animals, those needing additional care and animals awaiting rescue transport among its foster needs. Foster carers must be at least nineteen and have time for another animal. Responsibilities include daily care and a safe environment, with possible transport to the shelter, veterinary appointments or adoption events. The team shares current needs through its foster board and communications.
Community service follows a separate route
Court-required community service is separate from ordinary volunteering. Its published tasks include cleaning, washing crates, laundry and landscaping, with no animal handling. Participants must be at least sixteen and arrange orientation through the coordinator. Official pages explain both routes, helping applicants choose the appropriate process and understand what preparation is required before starting. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
