Blue Cross of India

India - Tamil Nadu - Chennai

Blue Cross of India links street-animal rescue in Chennai with a Guindy hospital, mobile treatment, sterilisation and shelters for animals unable to live independently.

From a report in Chennai to specialist rescue

Blue Cross of India receives reports of sick, injured and abandoned animals across Greater Chennai. Rescue routes bring street animals to its Guindy hospital for treatment and rehabilitation. A separate specialist team handles difficult situations, including animals trapped in wells, storm drains, high buildings and towers, and takes part in disaster relief.

A hospital serving more than dogs and cats

The Guindy hospital also treats cattle, horses, donkeys, pigs, birds and other small animals. Separate treatment areas serve different needs, including mothers with young, older dogs and animals requiring isolation. Recovered street animals undergo birth-control surgery where relevant and are returned to the same recorded location from which they were collected.

Taking treatment to the animal

Launched in March 2022, the mobile hospital brings a veterinary team and surgical facilities to street animals. Its equipment includes an operating theatre, sterilisation equipment, oxygen and space for transporting patients. An awning and fold-out preparation table expand the treatment area for camps or disaster response, supporting care outside the fixed hospital.

A longer stay for animals that cannot fend for themselves

The charity maintains shelters in Guindy, Todukkadu and Kunnam. They accommodate rescued street animals and abandoned pets that cannot manage independently, with adoption pursued where suitable. Its public outpatient clinic provides another connection to local families: requested donations help support care for street animals and disadvantaged community caregivers.

Education and care at the end of life

Blue Cross of India invites schools and colleges to request humane-education activities. It also opened a small-animal crematorium in October 2021, adding a service for bereaved owners. The official programme descriptions explain these different routes; contact the team for current clinic arrangements and rescue requests. AnimalProtech’s map helps locate the Chennai organisation within the wider animal-protection network.
