More than finding an adoptive home
Athens Area Humane Society combines adoption with services that help people continue caring for their pets in Georgia. Its 2025 impact figures record 1,319 animals finding homes and 8,665 sterilisation procedures. These represent different parts of the work: one creates new households for animals, while the other serves a broader preventive-care role.
Food assistance through Full Bellies
Full Bellies Food Bowl works with local charities, including the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, to distribute pet food. The published format is a free drive-through at the Mitchell Bridge Road campus on the first and third Saturdays of the month. Families should check the current event information before travelling to collect supplies.
The preparation behind each distribution
Volunteers do much of the practical preparation, dividing dry dog and cat food and litter into smaller bags and organising other donated goods. They also help run distribution events. In figures dated 4 October 2026, the programme reported 480,667 pounds of pet food distributed that year and service across thirty-two counties in and around Athens.
An appointment-based public clinic
The organisation’s veterinary clinic offers affordable sterilisation and routine wellness services to the public, including examinations, vaccines and diagnostics. Appointments are required. Owners of animals aged seven or older are asked to speak with the medical team before booking surgery. The online clinic page explains available services and possible additional charges for needs beyond routine procedures.
A separate route for community cats
Community-cat appointments must be arranged by phone or email before trapping; they are not listed in the ordinary online booking system. Cats must arrive in humane traps. The programme combines sterilisation with vaccination and an identifying ear tip, followed by return arrangements. Contact the clinic first so capture, admission and recovery can be coordinated around an actual appointment. Official programme information · AnimalProtech map.
